Port Carling Retaining Wall Replacement
A portion of the cobblestone retaining wall located below the building at 114 Medora Street failed in December of 2022. The wall is not suitable for a localized repair and full replacement is required to ensure public safety is maintained and to provide a lasting solution for many years to come.
The wall will be removed and replaced with a new retaining wall system that consists of steel sheet piling behind a stacked dimensional stone wall in front. This solution has been selected primarily as a result of the limited amount of space available in this location. When completed, the new wall will match the existing look and character of the other retaining walls along Medora Street (Muskoka Road 118W) in Port Carling.
Bronte Construction has been awarded the contract to complete the work for the Township. Tatham Engineering Ltd. has been retained by the Township to perform contract administration and inspection of the work.
The anticipated schedule is to commence work the week of February 19, and to complete installation of the retaining wall system by the Victoria Day Weekend in May 2024.
While the work is being completed, those in the area should anticipate: dust, noise, vibrations, impacts to traffic and access. Wherever possible, these impacts have been mitigated in planning this project and the provisions of the contract.
The timing of the work has been scheduled to be complete by the Victoria Day Weekend to minimize the impacts to the area to extent that was possible.
Night work between sunset and sunrise as well as work on weekends and statutory holidays will not be permitted unless approved by the Township. Approval of such measures will only be provided in the case of an emergency or to maintain project schedule and is not planned at this time.
The flow of traffic will be maintained to the extent possible, but delays should be expected when passing through the site especially during peak hours. Access to all businesses and properties within the construction zone will be maintained.
