Downtown Enhancement Action Plan Moving Forward

MUSKOKA LAKES – The Township of Muskoka Lakes is excited to be moving forward with the Downtown Enhancement Action Plan for the urban centres of Port Carling and Bala. The Township of Muskoka Lakes launched their Downtown Enhancement Initiative with the support from Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) in the fall of 2017.

A working group made up of a mix of staff, business owners and residents was formed to help guide the project and decisions. Both business and resident surveys were conducted from September to November. Specific goals and actions were developed and linked to the researched data and will provide directions for implementation moving forward.

The plan outlines ways to generate more traffic downtown, especially in the seasons outside of summer, in line with the Township’s Economic Development Strategy. The action plan includes a number of initiatives such as enhancing downtown beautification, pedestrian connectivity and public gathering spaces, creating tools to encourage new events, and the development of new marketing activities to encourage residents and visitors to explore the downtown cores.

“Downtowns are the heart of the community”, states Corey Moore, Communications & Economic Development Specialist for the Township. “It is important that we continue to support the downtown cores of Bala and Port Carling. A strong and vibrant downtown will help attract further investment in the area and attribute to a greater quality of life for residents.”

The completion of the Downtown Enhancement Action Plan has aligned perfectly with the Provincial Government’s announcement of a Main Street Revitalization Initiative. Township Council has supported leveraging allocated funds from this initiative for additional funding opportunities to support downtown pedestrian connectivity projects in Bala and Port Carling, that were not completed during previous streetscape improvements.
