Township of Muskoka Lakes Approves 2018 Budget

MUSKOKA LAKES – On Friday, February 16, 2018 the Council of the Township of Muskoka Lakes approved the 2018 Operating and Capital Budgets. The budget process included a two-day review period by the Budget Committee. The Budget Committee included four citizen representatives and three Councilors. In addition to the Budget Committee there was an evening public meeting to receive community input and two Committee of the Whole meetings to discuss the budget, prior to final approval by Council.

The 2018 budget has a net levy of $11,351,785.00, which represents a 9.83% increase over the prior year. The levy for the 2018 budget consists of an operating levy increase of 4.83% and a capital levy increase of 5.00%. The approved budget will have no impact on current service levels.

For every $100,000 in assessment, tax payers will pay $120.14; an increase of $6.85 over 2017. This represents a 6.05% increase in the residential tax rate from the previous year.

As in 2017, the budget includes a 5.00% dedicated capital levy. This policy which commenced in 2017 and is reviewed annually by Council, will increase discretionary reserve levels and will continue the strategic path to increase reserves in order to maintain Township infrastructure and service levels. The funding of future infrastructure needs will continue to be a challenge however, as the 5.00% dedicated capital reserve contribution on its own will not be sufficient to fund the Township’s forecasted capital needs over the next 10 years and into the future.
